THE NUBA

AND

AFRICA

After repeated failed attempts to secure funding for making movies, and the resulting unrealized film projects, Leni Riefenstahl was in some despair regarding her art. All efforts to mount a mainstream or even independent film had been blocked or otherwise thwarted.

Taking special note of a picture she found in a German magazine, her interest in seeking out distinctive African tribes peaked.

What resulted was a unique journey into the non westernized territories of the Sudan.

It was all too apparent to Riefenstahl, who journeyed back to Sudan many times and lived with the native people for months, that their culture and perhaps the people themselves were destined for destruction.

Documented in a series of highly acclaimed photographic texts, Leni Riefenstahl has demonstrated that she remains a remarkable talent.
